JSS 1 – JSS 3

Junior secondary: everyone takes everything.

Seventeen subjects on the national curriculum, including a pre-vocational trade subject. There are no other electives at this level; the breadth is the point.

SSS 1 – SSS 3

Senior secondary: compulsory core plus a stream.

Every senior student takes the compulsory subjects and then chooses electives from one stream, normally nine subjects in all for WASSCE.

Compulsory for all streams

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Civic Education
  • Computer Studies
  • One trade subject (solar installation or livestock farming)

Trade subject (one, chosen in JSS 1 and continued to SSS 3)

Science leads to medicine, engineering, pharmacy, nursing, computer science, architecture, agriculture.

Arts leads to law, mass communication, languages, international relations, education, theatre and fine arts.

Commercial leads to accountancy, banking and finance, business administration, economics, marketing.
